Under Secretary of Commerce for Oceans and Atmosphere and NOAA Administrator Jane Lubchenco visited the Great Lakes Environmental Research Lab in Ann Arbor last Tuesday afternoon to discuss Great Lakes science and collaborations with CILER and federal staff.  That evening, several University of Michigan campus partners co-hosted a reception for Dr. Lubchenco, including CILER, the School of Natural Resources and Environment (SNRE), Michigan Sea Grant, the Graham Environmental Sustainability Institute, and the Great Lakes Regional Integrated Sciences and Assessments Center. 

CILER Director, Allen Burton, presents to NOAA’s Science Advisory Board

Last week, CILER Director Allen Burton presented to NOAA’s Science Advisory Board – a group of scientists that assesses and directs NOAA’s research path.

The presentation, called Announcing CILER XXII: An Essential NOAA App, recognized the crucial role that 22-year old CILER plays in helping NOAA reach its research goals. Burton highlighted that CILER’s host, University of Michigan, has invested more than $28 million into 44 NOAA projects. Since 2007 alone, CILER has contributed more than $17 million.

Speaker: Marco Bueno

Bueno is a Brazilian biologist and holds a Master´s degree in Environmental Management (University of Nottingham, UK). He works as an environmental analyst at  the Amazon Region Protected Areas Programme (ARPA) at the Ministry of Environment of Brazil. ARPA is the largest initiative in tropical forest conservation in the world and Bueno is in charge of planning and coordinating the implementation of the ARPA component concerning the integration of local human communities with protected areas management.

Dr. Gary A. Lamberti is Professor and Chair of the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Notre Dame, where he teaches Biostatistics, Stream Ecology, and Restoration Ecology.  His primary research interests are in stream and watershed ecology, and include identifying and remediating human impacts on aquatic ecosystems; the ecology of native and introduced Pacific salmon; and the control of invasive aquatic organisms.
